ABOUT ME

ABOUT ME

I am a scientist first (visit my lab website), but a painter close second.

I have painted since my early teens, and as an undergraduate in Würzburg, I was an apprentice to the painter Josef Versl. This formative experience directed the development of my painting technique and deeply influenced my artistic goals. Among these, personal expression and interpretation of nature and of the visual world rank highest.

Speed and spontaneity are of essence in my art, and I favor watercolor as a medium. Watercolor tools are readily portable, facilitating work en plein air (my strongest source of inspiration) and during travel. I constantly experiment with new techniques, and the past few years have seen a significant shift in style toward more abstract interpretations. My paintings are rooted in Western traditions. Style is like handwriting; it develops naturally to become an unmistakable and unique tool of personal expression. My painting is an extension of my handwriting, and in that I also feel an affinity to the painters in China and Japan.
